Supported Employment

Barrowmore Supported Employment is the arm of Barrowmore and works with people with disabilities who have expressed a wish to become employed and thereby enhancing their opportunities for a more independent lifestyle.

Barrowmore operates a workshop scheme in conjunction with the Department of Work and Pensions to provide support in jobs of 16 hours or more for disabled people, in mainstream employment, who have more complex barriers to finding and retaining work but who, with the right support, can work effectively and develop in their job. Where appropriate, supported employees may also progress to unsupported employment.

In addition Barrowmore also works in Partnership with TNG Ltd in delivering the government’s national initiative of Pathways to Work whereby the department works with people on incapacity and related benefits.

Both schemes are run by a team of three dedicated Employment Officers and department manager, with support from two administrative assistants.

Are you an Employee and may be looking for work?

Who are Barrowmore?

Barowmore are a charity based in Great Barrow, near Chester. The supported Employment department is a Workshep provider for the North West.

What is a workstep?

Workstep is a government program run by Jobcentre Plus, and offers support to people with disabilities who want to work.

You will receive help to find the right job for you, and support once in that job until you are ready to ‘go it alone’.

Because Workstep is run by jobcentre Plus, at some point you will need to speak to your Disability Employment Advisor (DEA) who will be based within your local Jobcentre Plus.

Your DEA will be able to tell you more about the help you can receive from Workstep, and can make a referral to our service on your behalf.

What happens next?

Once we receive your referral we will call you to arrange a meeting. This meeting can take place wherever you feel most comfortable.

We will then talk through with you the type of support you can expect to receive before you decide whether you want our help.

What can Barrowmore and Workstep do for me?

At Barrowmore, we will spend some time getting to know you, to find out

• What skills you have
• What kind of work you want to do
• How many hours you want to work
• How far you can travel

We will help you apply for jobs, and give you support at interviews.

We can also work out how much money you need to earn so that you are not financially worse off.

So can I still claim my benefits?

Once you working, you will get paid a wage instead of receiving benefits. But, there may be some benefits that you can still get.

What help can I get once I get a job?

We will be with you when you first start your job, to help you settle in and get to know your work mates.

We will make sure that your employer looks after you, and that you get the right support from your boss.

Once you are settled in to your new job, we will come and see you every few months to make sure that you are still ok, and help you with any areas of your work that you may be having problems with.

How do I find out more?

If you would like to know more about Workstep and Barrowmore, we would be happy to come and see you, or you can visit the DEA at your local Jobcentre Plus.
